Do not be dissuaded by the line around the block at the Progressive Reading Series. It is not there because the joint is full, but because each attendee must fill out a mini form before entering — the fee is a direct contribution to the campaign of a progressive candidate, and there are rules about that. But don't be scared! It's easy, and once you get in, you'll remember why you like San Francisco. The crowd is attractive, intelligent, and bent on bluing all 50 states, with the honorable Stephen Elliott presiding. He'll ask you for more money in such a way you'll want to give it to him, but most of the time will be spent paying rapt attention to the high-quality literature onstage.
Third Saturday of every month, 7 p.m. Starts: Oct. 18. Continues through Oct. 18, 2008
