Working Girls and Boys

"I have supported myself as a whore for the last twelve years, since it's not like writing pays the bills." That's writer and editor Mattilda, aka Matt Bernstein Sycamore, in the introduction to Nobody Passes, the well-reviewed anthology of essays on gender. At The Sex Workers Art Show, many of Sycamore's compadres in high-quality/low-pay cultural production are center stage. In smart and titillating performances, whores, phone sex operators, fetish models, and other disreputables take the spotlight: Dirty Martini and the World Famous *BOB* hold up the burlesque end of things, while Chris Kraus and local superstar author of How I Learned to Snap, Kirk Read, do literary duty. The wide range of the show is intentional: organizer Annie Oakley told Time Out New York that "The point is not to show one particular view of the industry, but many honest ones." Lorelei Lee, Erin Markey, Krylon Superstar, and Keva I. Lee are also touring with the show.
