The Mission District becomes the official center of the DIY universe today, as hardscrabble underground craftspeople, music makers, and artists all converge on the appropriately named Treat Street for a free six-hour party known as the First Annual Rock Make Street Festival. Will this meeting of minds lead to some kind of consumer revolution? Indie rock bands and renegade knitters have long shared a similar anti-mass-production ethos, but rarely have they had the chance to take it to the streets together. Somewhere in the midst of wailing strains from Rademacher and bicycle-print handbags made by Pollyanna Cowgirl, DIY may just come to mean Dominating Ingenuity Year-Round.
